Service Intervals for Volkswagen Golf VIII 1.5 TSI / 1.5 eTSI 116–150 HP
The Volkswagen Golf VIII was offered with several 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engines. This group includes 1.5 TSI and 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid versions rated at 85 kW, 96 kW and 110 kW.
The “116 HP” designation commonly used in vehicle databases corresponds to Volkswagen’s 85 kW / 115 PS version in the later Golf VIII range. Earlier Golf VIII models were offered with 96 kW / 130 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS 1.5-litre engines.
This page covers conventional 1.5 TSI and 48-volt 1.5 eTSI versions. It does not cover the 1.4 eHybrid, GTE, GTI, GTD or Golf R.
Important: the exact maintenance plan depends on the VIN, model year, destination market, engine and gearbox code, PR codes, service regime, and operating conditions. If the Service Interval Display, digital service record, or Volkswagen Digital Service Schedule differs from the information below, the VIN-specific Volkswagen schedule takes priority.
Which Golf VIII versions are covered
| Version | Volkswagen output | Typical drivetrain | Maintenance relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 TSI | 85 kW / 115 PS, often listed as 116 HP | Manual, depending on market | Later Golf VIII version; verify oil approval and service regime by VIN |
| 1.5 eTSI | 85 kW / 115 PS, often listed as 116 HP | 48V mild hybrid, 7-speed DSG | Has a belt-driven starter-generator and 48V system |
| 1.5 TSI | 96 kW / 130 PS | Originally offered with 6-speed manual gearbox | Conventional petrol version |
| 1.5 eTSI | 96 kW / 130–131 PS | 48V mild hybrid, 7-speed DSG | Additional 48V components and starter-generator belt |
| 1.5 TSI | 110 kW / 150 PS | Originally offered with 6-speed manual gearbox | Conventional petrol version |
| 1.5 eTSI | 110 kW / 150 PS | 48V mild hybrid, 7-speed DSG | Early Golf VIII 150 PS eTSI used the DQ200 DSG family |
Volkswagen’s initial Golf VIII technical data lists 1.5-litre engines with 96 kW / 200 Nm and 110 kW / 250 Nm. The 1.5 eTSI versions use a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a belt-driven starter-generator.
Engine codes documented for early Golf VIII versions
The following codes appear in Volkswagen technical information for the 2020 Golf VIII. This is not a complete code list for every market or later facelift version.
| Engine code | Output | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHFA | 96 kW / 130 PS | 200 Nm | 1.5-litre petrol engine |
| DPBA | 96 kW / 130 PS | 200 Nm | 1.5-litre petrol engine |
| DFYA | 110 kW / 150 PS | 250 Nm | 1.5-litre petrol engine |
| DPCA | 110 kW / 150 PS | 250 Nm | 1.5-litre petrol engine |
The vehicle data sticker contains the engine code, gearbox code, PR codes, and other configuration data. Engine code alone is not always enough to establish whether the vehicle is a conventional TSI or a 48V eTSI, or which gearbox service rules apply.

Engine Oil Change
QI4 — Fixed Service Interval
If the vehicle has the fixed QI4 service regime, the engine oil and oil filter are replaced every:
15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first.
This schedule is often appropriate for cars that make frequent short journeys, operate mainly in urban traffic, or have regular cold starts.
QI6 — Flexible LongLife Service
QI6 does not mean that the oil must always be changed exactly at 30,000 km.
The vehicle calculates the service timing from actual operating conditions. The maximum limit is:
up to 30,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first.
The service indicator can request an oil change earlier.
Not every 1.5 TSI or eTSI vehicle is necessarily assigned the QI6 regime. For example, Volkswagen’s 2020 technical table lists a fixed-service oil specification for engine code DHFA, while other 1.5-litre entries have both fixed and flexible-service entries.
| Service regime | Oil-change interval | How it is determined |
|---|---|---|
| QI4 | 15,000 km / 1 year | Fixed interval |
| QI6 | Up to 30,000 km / 2 years | Calculated by the vehicle |
Which engine oil should be used
For the verified early Golf VIII 1.5-litre engine codes DFYA, DHFA, DPBA and DPCA, Volkswagen technical information specifies:
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Oil viscosity | SAE 0W-20 |
| Volkswagen approval | VW 508 00 |
| Approximate refill quantity with filter | 4.3 litres |
| Oil filter | Replace together with engine oil |
The 4.3-litre figure is a refill quantity, not a reason to pour in exactly 4.3 litres without checking the final oil level.
For the later 85 kW / 115 PS version and any engine code not listed above, confirm the required VW approval from the VIN-specific owner’s manual, the engine-bay label, or Volkswagen’s Digital Service Schedule. Do not assume that every 1.5-litre Golf VIII uses the same oil merely because it is labelled “1.5 TSI”.
Inspection Service
For normal conditions, the Golf VIII inspection interval is generally:
30,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first.
An inspection service and an engine-oil change are not always the same event.
For example, a Golf using QI4 can receive an oil change at 15,000 km, while the full inspection remains due at 30,000 km or two years.
The exact checklist depends on the vehicle’s equipment, but may include checks of:
- engine and transmission for leaks or damage;
- braking system, brake discs, pads and brake-fluid level;
- suspension and steering components;
- tyres, tyre pressures and tread depth;
- lighting, wipers and washer system;
- cooling-system level and frost protection;
- battery condition;
- exhaust system;
- underbody protection;
- electronic fault memory;
- service interval display.
Spark Plugs
The 1.5 TSI and 1.5 eTSI are four-cylinder engines and use:
four spark plugs.
For normal operation with EN 228-compliant petrol, the scheduled replacement interval is:
60,000 km or 4 years, whichever comes first.
Volkswagen specifies shorter intervals for some markets with petrol that does not comply with EN 228. Therefore, the VIN-specific service schedule remains decisive for imported vehicles.
Do not wait for the scheduled interval if there are symptoms such as misfires, rough running, difficult starting, engine warning lights, or ignition-system fault codes.
Engine Air Filter
Under normal operating conditions, the engine air-filter interval is:
90,000 km or 6 years, whichever comes first.
For countries classified by Volkswagen as having high dust levels, the maintenance table specifies:
30,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first.
The filter should also be inspected earlier if the car is regularly used on unpaved roads, near construction sites, or in unusually dusty conditions.
Cabin Filter
The normal replacement interval for the dust and pollen filter is:
60,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first.
For high-dust conditions, Volkswagen specifies a maximum of:
30,000 km or 1 year.
The cabin filter may require earlier replacement if there is reduced airflow, frequent windscreen fogging, unpleasant odours, or visible contamination.
Brake Fluid
Brake-fluid servicing must be checked by model year and VIN rather than simply by registration date.
| Model year / schedule | First replacement | Subsequent replacements |
|---|---|---|
| MY2020 | After 3 years where specified by the VIN schedule | Every 2 years |
| MY2021 and newer | Every 2 years | Every 2 years |
Some Golf VIII technical maintenance tables list brake-fluid replacement every two years. This is why the Digital Service Schedule and service history for the individual VIN take priority over a generic rule.
Do not automatically apply the “first replacement after three years” rule to every Golf VIII.
Petrol Fuel Filter
The standard Golf VIII maintenance table includes scheduled diesel fuel-filter operations, but does not specify a separate routine replacement interval for the petrol fuel filter on the 1.5 TSI or 1.5 eTSI.
Therefore:
do not automatically add a 90,000 km petrol fuel-filter replacement.
The 90,000 km interval is associated with diesel fuel-filter maintenance and must not be transferred to a petrol 1.5 TSI/eTSI.
Timing Belt
The 1.5 TSI engine uses a toothed timing belt rather than a timing chain.
For normal operating conditions, Volkswagen’s Golf VIII maintenance table does not state a routine timing-belt replacement interval for petrol engines with a toothed belt.
Therefore, a statement such as:
“Replace the timing belt every 210,000 km”
is not correct as a universal rule for the Golf VIII 1.5 TSI or eTSI.
For countries classified as having high dust levels, Volkswagen specifies replacement of the petrol timing belt and camshaft-drive tensioning roller at:
120,000 km.
This high-dust schedule must not automatically be applied to every Golf VIII in Europe, and the 210,000 km diesel interval must not be applied to the petrol 1.5 TSI.
The timing belt must be replaced without waiting for a scheduled interval if it is damaged or contaminated by oil, coolant, fuel, or brake fluid.
Poly-V Belt and 48V eTSI System
The conventional 1.5 TSI and the 1.5 eTSI must be treated differently.
The 1.5 eTSI has a 48V mild-hybrid system with a belt-driven starter-generator and a 48V lithium-ion battery. These components are not fitted to a conventional 1.5 TSI.
| Maintenance item | Normal operating conditions | High-dust countries | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional Poly-V belt | No routine renewal interval stated | 60,000 km | Conventional TSI |
| Poly-V belt and tensioner for belt-driven starter-generator | 180,000 km | 60,000 km | eTSI only |
The 180,000 km interval must not be applied to a conventional 1.5 TSI that does not have the belt-driven starter-generator.
DSG Transmission Service
The early 150 PS Golf VIII eTSI was offered with a 7-speed DQ200 DSG. Volkswagen’s scheduled 60,000 km and 120,000 km DSG oil-change intervals are explicitly linked to particular gearbox codes, not to every DSG transmission.
| Gearbox entry in maintenance table | Scheduled oil change |
|---|---|
| DSG 0DD | 60,000 km |
| DSG 0GC | 120,000 km |
| DQ200 used in early 1.5 eTSI | Do not apply the 0DD or 0GC interval automatically; verify by VIN |
The commonly repeated rule “every DSG needs an oil change every 60,000 km” is therefore not correct.
Before scheduling transmission work, identify the exact gearbox code from the vehicle data sticker, VIN data, or Volkswagen Digital Service Schedule.
Coolant
The Golf VIII maintenance plan includes checks of:
- coolant level;
- frost protection;
- cooling-system condition;
- leaks, hoses and connections.
It does not provide a universal fixed interval for a complete coolant replacement on the 1.5 TSI or eTSI.
Coolant is renewed when required by a repair procedure, contamination, leakage, loss of frost protection, or another VIN-specific Volkswagen instruction.
What Should Not Be Carried Over from Other Golf Models
| Common claim | Correct position for Golf VIII 1.5 TSI / eTSI |
|---|---|
| “The timing belt must be replaced every 210,000 km.” | Not a universal petrol 1.5 TSI rule |
| “The petrol fuel filter is replaced every 90,000 km.” | Do not transfer the diesel fuel-filter interval |
| “Every DSG requires an oil change every 60,000 km.” | Depends on the exact gearbox code |
| “The 180,000 km belt interval applies to every 1.5 TSI.” | It applies to the belt-driven starter-generator system on eTSI versions |
| “QI6 means oil changes exactly every 30,000 km.” | 30,000 km is the maximum limit; the vehicle may request service earlier |
| “The first brake-fluid change is always after three years.” | MY2021+ schedules use two years; VIN-specific information takes priority |
| “Every 1.5 TSI uses the same oil.” | Oil approval and flexible-service eligibility must be confirmed by engine code and VIN |

Frequently Asked Questions
What oil should I use in a Golf VIII 1.5 TSI?
For verified early engine codes DFYA, DHFA, DPBA and DPCA, Volkswagen specifies SAE 0W-20 oil meeting VW 508 00. The approximate refill quantity with a new filter is 4.3 litres.
For later engines, including the 85 kW / 115 PS version, confirm the required oil approval using the VIN and owner’s manual.
How often should the oil be changed?
With QI4 fixed servicing:
every 15,000 km or once a year.
With QI6 flexible LongLife servicing:
when requested by the Service Interval Display, with a maximum of 30,000 km or two years.
How often should spark plugs be replaced?
For normal EN 228-compliant petrol:
every 60,000 km or four years.
The 1.5-litre engine uses four spark plugs.
Does the 1.5 TSI use a timing belt or timing chain?
The Golf VIII 1.5 TSI/eTSI uses a toothed timing belt to drive the camshafts.
Should the timing belt be changed at 210,000 km?
No universal 210,000 km factory interval should be stated for the petrol 1.5 TSI/eTSI.
Volkswagen’s Golf VIII maintenance table does not list a normal-condition scheduled replacement interval for petrol timing belts. A 120,000 km interval is shown only for high-dust countries.
Does the eTSI need additional belt service?
Yes. The 1.5 eTSI has a belt-driven starter-generator. Under normal operating conditions, Volkswagen’s maintenance table specifies replacement of its Poly-V belt and tensioner at 180,000 km.
This does not apply to a conventional 1.5 TSI without the 48V mild-hybrid system.
Does every DSG need an oil change at 60,000 km?
No. Volkswagen lists 60,000 km only for the DSG 0DD and 120,000 km for DSG 0GC. The exact gearbox must be identified before assigning a service interval.
