Inspecting a used Volkswagen Golf VIII 1.0 TSI should involve considerably more than starting the engine and taking a short test drive. On the Golf VIII, the vehicle identity, service history, bodywork, engine and cooling system, brakes, suspension, electronics and software should all be checked separately. On the 1.0 eTSI, the 48-volt mild-hybrid system and 7-speed DQ200 DSG also require specific attention.
With this generation, it is particularly important not to mix maintenance and technical information from different Golf versions.
The versions covered here include:
- 1.0 TSI 90 HP / 66 kW — conventional petrol engine;
- 1.0 TSI 110 HP / 81 kW — conventional petrol engine;
- 1.0 eTSI 110 HP / 81 kW — 48-volt mild hybrid with DSG.
According to official Volkswagen technical data for the relevant European specifications, the 90 HP 1.0 TSI was paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the conventional 110 HP 1.0 TSI with a 6-speed manual, and the 110 HP 1.0 eTSI with a 7-speed DSG. Volkswagen identifies the eTSI transmission as part of the DQ200 family.
A proper pre-purchase inspection should ideally be carried out on a lift and with suitable diagnostic equipment. Volkswagen's own Approved Used programme follows a multi-stage inspection that includes service history, recalls and workshop actions, diagnostics, engine, transmission, bodywork, brakes, tyres, suspension, electronics and a road test.

1. Identify the Exact Vehicle Version First
Before assessing condition, establish exactly which Golf you are looking at.
Volkswagen lists the following main configurations for the versions covered here:

Volkswagen service documentation links the DLAB engine code with the 66 kW version and DLAA with the 81 kW version.
However, engine output or engine code alone is not enough to identify the complete vehicle specification. The transmission and presence of the 48V system must also be confirmed.
Before buying, confirm
- VIN;
- model year;
- power output in kW;
- transmission type;
- engine code;
- conventional TSI or eTSI;
- current service regime — fixed or flexible;
- original destination market.
If information in the advertisement does not match the car or its documents, resolve the discrepancy before proceeding.
2. VIN Check
The VIN is the primary identifier for an individual vehicle.
Volkswagen uses the VIN to access vehicle-specific information, and its digital owner's manual for vehicles produced from August 2019 onwards is also accessed using the VIN.
During an inspection:
- compare the VIN on the vehicle with the registration documents;
- make sure the VIN is clearly legible and shows no obvious signs of tampering;
- use the same VIN when requesting service history;
- use it to check for open recalls and workshop actions.
Volkswagen's Approved Used checklist also begins by recording the VIN, vehicle year, mileage, service history and current service regime.
3. Service History Matters More Than a Single Mileage Figure
Mileage should always be assessed together with maintenance history.
Volkswagen's own used-car inspection procedure checks:
- whether the vehicle is present in the service system;
- maintenance history;
- current service regime;
- whether scheduled servicing has been missed;
- whether records in the Digital Service Schedule are up to date.
What to Ask the Seller For
Where possible, review:
- Digital Service Schedule;
- invoices and workshop orders;
- service dates;
- mileage at each visit;
- engine-oil changes;
- spark-plug replacement;
- brake-fluid replacement;
- filters;
- repair work;
- warranty repairs;
- recalls and service actions.
The history should be chronological and logical.
For example:
35,000 km → 52,000 km → 71,000 km → current mileage 64,000 km
requires an explanation.
A car does not need to have been serviced exclusively by an authorised Volkswagen dealer to be a good vehicle. A competent independent specialist can also service it correctly.
What matters is that the following are clear:
- intervals;
- materials used;
- work performed;
- mileage;
- dates.
4. Check the Engine-Oil History
For DLAA/DLAB engines, factory technical information specifies:
SAE 0W-20, VW 508 00
with an approximate refill quantity of around 4.0 litres including the filter.
For this reason, service records should ideally show oil carrying the required Volkswagen approval.
A simple entry such as:
“0W-20”
does not by itself confirm that the factory requirement was met.
The important specification is VW 508 00.
When buying, check:
- regularity of oil changes;
- absence of very long unexplained intervals;
- oil specification used;
- current oil level;
- external oil leaks.
5. Do Not Look for a “Timing Chain Replacement”
DLAA and DLAB engines use a toothed timing belt to drive the camshafts, not a timing chain.
Therefore, a service-history entry such as:
“1.0 TSI timing chain replacement”
does not match the design of this engine and should be clarified.
Volkswagen technical information specifies a toothed belt.
6. Important Correction: There Is No Special “After 150,000 km” Rule
Do not use a generic rule such as:
“After 150,000 km the timing belt must be checked or replaced.”
There is no confirmed universal 150,000 km threshold for DLAA/DLAB in the factory maintenance schedule.
Volkswagen's own Approved Used inspection uses a more accurate principle:
check the belt and replace it according to the applicable ELSA intervals.
Volkswagen service documentation also states that, on petrol engines, toothed belts that have come into contact with:
- engine oil;
- brake fluid;
- fuel;
- coolant;
must be replaced.
Therefore, when buying, check
- for oil contamination around the belt drive;
- for coolant contamination;
- for visible belt damage;
- for damaged edges;
- for cracking or delamination;
- for unusual noise from the timing-drive area.
But do not invent a mandatory replacement at 150,000 km or automatically at 210,000 km without checking the VIN-specific maintenance requirement.
7. Check the Spark Plugs
The 1.0 TSI has three cylinders and therefore uses three spark plugs.
Volkswagen service documentation for the petrol Golf VIII specifies:
60,000 km or 4 years, whichever comes first.
If the car has passed this point and there is no evidence that the spark plugs were replaced, it is reasonable to include them in the next service.
There is no fourth spark plug — this is a three-cylinder engine.
8. A Cold Start Is Essential for a Proper Inspection
Where possible, begin the inspection with a fully cold engine.
This allows you to assess behaviour before warm-up hides certain symptoms.
Volkswagen's Approved Used procedure specifically checks:
- cold and hot starting;
- engine operation;
- noise;
- vibration;
- smooth acceleration and deceleration.
With the engine cold, check that
- it starts promptly;
- there are no persistent critical warnings;
- idle speed stabilises;
- there are no strong metallic noises;
- there is no severe misfire;
- vibration is not excessive;
- smoke does not persist after startup;
- there is no strong fuel smell in the engine compartment.
A three-cylinder engine will not feel exactly like a four-cylinder engine
The 1.0 TSI has three cylinders.
Its sound and mild idle vibration can therefore differ from a 1.5 TSI.
More concerning signs include:
- a sudden change in engine behaviour;
- unstable idle;
- strong shaking;
- EPC / Check Engine;
- loss of power;
- confirmed misfires.
9. Engine-Bay Inspection
Volkswagen's official used-car inspection includes checking the engine and engine bay for leaks and damage, as well as belts, hoses, engine oil, brake fluid, coolant and a load test of the 12V battery.
Before driving, check
Engine oil
- level;
- fresh leakage;
- condition around the filler cap;
- obvious signs of oil/coolant mixing.
Coolant
With the engine cold, check:
- level;
- expansion tank condition;
- connections;
- hoses;
- dried coolant residue;
- fresh wet areas.
If the coolant is noticeably low or the owner regularly tops it up, the cooling system should be diagnosed.
Hoses and connections
Look for:
- wet connections;
- cracks;
- improvised fasteners;
- damaged hoses.
Wiring
Pay attention to:
- non-factory splices;
- damaged insulation;
- signs of accident repair;
- poorly installed aftermarket equipment.
10. Always Check the 12V Battery
Even on the eTSI, the 48V system does not replace the conventional 12V electrical network.
Volkswagen's Approved Used inspection includes:
- 12V battery load test;
- battery mounting;
- physical condition.
Battery condition is especially important if:
- starting is inconsistent;
- Start/Stop is frequently unavailable;
- several electronic warnings appear at the same time;
- the car has been parked for long periods;
- battery age is unknown.
A proper battery test is preferable to simply checking no-load voltage.
11. Check Engine and Transmission Leaks from Underneath
A complete inspection without a lift is incomplete.
Volkswagen's Approved Used procedure includes checks from underneath for:
- engine leaks;
- transmission leaks;
- exhaust system;
- heat shields;
- catalytic converter;
- brake lines;
- driveshafts;
- CV joints and boots;
- steering components;
- suspension arms;
- shock absorbers;
- underbody condition.
For this reason, it is sensible to put the car on a lift before purchasing.
An inspection from above alone may miss a gearbox leak, underbody damage or a torn CV boot.
12. Run Diagnostics Before Clearing Fault Codes
Volkswagen's Approved Used process carries out a diagnostic scan before the inspection and another fault-memory check after the road test.
A sensible independent inspection should use the same sequence:
- connect a diagnostic tool;
- save all stored faults;
- do not clear them before the road test;
- perform the road test;
- scan the vehicle again;
- compare the results.
Do Not Scan Only the Engine ECU
The Golf VIII has many interconnected control modules.
At minimum, scan:
- engine;
- transmission;
- ABS / ESC;
- airbags;
- steering;
- parking systems;
- cameras and driver-assistance systems;
- infotainment;
- gateway;
- 48V system on the eTSI.
A stored fault does not automatically mean an expensive repair.
Determine:
- whether it is currently active;
- whether it returns after the drive;
- which control unit it belongs to;
- whether there are matching symptoms.
13. Checking the Conventional 1.0 TSI with Manual Transmission
For the 90 HP and conventional 110 HP TSI, inspect the manual gearbox and clutch.
Volkswagen's used-car inspection includes clutch and transmission operation during the road test.
During the drive, check that
- clutch engagement is smooth;
- there is no obvious clutch slip under load;
- gears engage without excessive force;
- gears do not jump out;
- there is no abnormal whine;
- there are no severe drivetrain vibrations under acceleration;
- the clutch pedal behaves consistently.
On a higher-mileage car, clutch condition matters more than the mileage number itself.
14. Checking the 1.0 eTSI: A Separate Configuration
The 1.0 eTSI is not simply a normal 1.0 TSI with a DSG gearbox.
Volkswagen equips it with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system including:
- 48V lithium-ion battery;
- belt-driven starter-generator;
- 48V electrical system;
- conversion between 48V and 12V networks;
- energy recuperation.
Volkswagen states that the starter-generator works as a generator and starter and provides short-term electrical assistance to the combustion engine, while the 48V battery stores recovered energy.
Before buying an eTSI, check
- no active 48V warnings;
- 12V battery condition;
- normal engine starting;
- Start/Stop operation;
- smooth automatic engine restart;
- no charging-system warnings;
- coasting function where conditions allow;
- no unusual belt-drive noise.
The eTSI is not a plug-in hybrid and does not require external charging.
15. Checking the DSG DQ200 / 0CW
Volkswagen identifies the 1.0 eTSI 110 HP as using a 7-speed DQ200 DSG.
During the road test, evaluate not just gear changes but also clutch behaviour at low speeds.
Volkswagen's Approved Used inspection includes:
- transmission operation;
- clutch operation;
- shifting;
- smooth acceleration and deceleration;
- warning messages.
Practical DQ200 Test
P → D
Engagement should be predictable, without a major delay or strong impact.
P → R
Reverse should also engage normally.
Several gentle take-offs
There should not be strong, repeatable clutch shudder.
Low-speed driving
When parking and crawling in traffic, check for repeated severe vibration.
Normal acceleration
The gearbox should shift without:
- warning messages;
- unexpected loss of drive;
- severe slipping;
- harsh impacts.
After warm-up
Repeat the assessment once the gearbox is warm.
Some Low-Speed DQ200 Feel Is Not Automatically a Fault
The DQ200 uses dry clutches.
Its low-speed behaviour can therefore feel different from a conventional torque-converter automatic.
A slight sense of clutch engagement is not, by itself, proof of a fault.
Further diagnosis is justified if there is:
- strong recurring shudder;
- significant D or R engagement delay;
- heavy mechanical impact;
- gearbox warning;
- clear slipping;
- difficulty moving away normally.
16. No DQ200 Oil Change at 60,000 km Does Not Automatically Mean Poor Maintenance
Do not apply wet-clutch DSG service schedules to the DQ200.
Volkswagen maintenance documentation lists regular oil-change operations for certain DSG designs separately, while the generic “oil and filter every 60,000 km” rule should not automatically be transferred to the DQ200 / 0CW.
Therefore, on an eTSI, the absence of an invoice saying:
“DSG oil service — 60,000 km”
is not automatically evidence of missed factory servicing.
The gearbox must still operate correctly and may require oil-related work during repairs, leakage correction or specific technical procedures.
17. Bodywork and Repair Evidence
Volkswagen's Approved Used checklist includes checking:
- glass;
- bonnet alignment;
- bumpers;
- body panels;
- damage;
- evidence of repair;
- paint condition;
- corrosion.
When buying, inspect
- panel-gap consistency;
- paint-shade differences;
- overspray on seals;
- wing and bonnet bolts;
- welds;
- sills;
- pillars;
- boot floor;
- front and rear structural areas;
- underside of the vehicle.
Paint-Thickness Gauge
A paint-thickness gauge is a useful independent method for finding repainted panels, although it is not itself a specific Volkswagen factory requirement.
A repainted panel does not automatically mean the car is bad.
The more important questions are:
- why it was painted;
- whether structural parts were damaged;
- whether the repair was done correctly;
- whether passive-safety systems still operate correctly.
18. Check Airbags and Seat Belts
Volkswagen's used-car inspection includes:
- warning lamps;
- seat-belt condition and function;
- associated warning systems.
When the ignition is switched on, observe the warning lamps.
Be cautious if:
- the airbag lamp never appears during self-test;
- the lamp remains illuminated;
- there are SRS faults;
- seat belts do not latch correctly;
- pretensioners or interior trim show evidence of post-accident intervention.
19. Brakes
Volkswagen's Approved Used checklist specifically includes checking:
- pad thickness and condition;
- brake discs;
- brake hoses;
- brake lines;
- parking brake;
- braking performance during the road test;
- abnormal noise;
- vehicle pull;
- pulsation;
- ABS operation.
Stationary Inspection
Inspect:
- disc surfaces;
- pronounced disc lip;
- uneven wear;
- pad condition;
- brake hoses.
On the Road
Under safe conditions, check that:
- the car brakes in a straight line;
- there is no severe steering-wheel vibration;
- pedal travel feels normal;
- there is no metal-on-metal noise;
- the electronic parking brake works correctly.
20. Tyre Check
Volkswagen recommends checking:
- tyre damage;
- tread depth;
- tyre pressure;
- evenness of wear;
- correct size;
- load index;
- speed rating;
- direction of rotation where applicable.
Uneven wear can indicate a need to inspect:
- wheel alignment;
- suspension;
- steering;
- previous impact damage.
Important
Volkswagen Approved Used uses its own internal tread-depth standards.
These should not be confused with the legal minimum, which varies by country and tyre type.
For a buyer, the key issue is the actual remaining useful life of the tyres.
21. Suspension and Steering
On a lift, check:
- shock absorbers;
- suspension arms;
- joints;
- boots;
- driveshafts;
- CV joints;
- steering connections;
- play;
- mountings.
Volkswagen includes these items in its official used-car inspection.
During the road test, listen and feel for:
- knocks;
- creaks;
- vehicle pulling;
- steering-wheel position when driving straight;
- vibration;
- wheel-bearing noise;
- harsh or abnormal reaction over bumps.
22. Golf VIII Electronics Need a Full Check
The Golf VIII uses a significantly more digital architecture than previous generations.
The inspection should therefore not stop at the engine.
Volkswagen's Approved Used checklist includes:
- all warning lights;
- central locking;
- Keyless where fitted;
- mirrors;
- electric windows;
- interior lighting;
- climate control;
- heated seats;
- infotainment;
- navigation;
- Bluetooth;
- Wi-Fi;
- multifunction steering wheel;
- Start/Stop;
- cameras;
- cruise control;
- Side Assist;
- Lane Assist;
- Park Assist and other installed systems.
Actually Test Every Important Feature
It is not enough to see that the screen powers on.
Check:
- touchscreen response;
- sound;
- Bluetooth;
- phone connection;
- reversing camera;
- parking sensors;
- air conditioning;
- physical and touch controls;
- instrument display;
- electronic parking brake.
23. Multiple Warnings at Once Do Not Necessarily Mean Multiple Independent Failures
The Golf VIII has a highly interconnected electronic architecture.
If warnings appear simultaneously for:
- Start/Stop;
- Front Assist;
- Lane Assist;
- parking system;
- electrical system;
- transmission,
do not immediately assume that all of these systems have failed independently.
First scan the fault memory and check the vehicle's power supply.
This is why a 12V battery test and a complete diagnostic scan are particularly important.
24. Check All Keys
Volkswagen's Approved Used checklist requires checking:
- all ignition keys;
- central locking;
- Keyless Entry;
- alarm, where fitted.
When purchasing, obtain all keys the seller claims are included.
A replacement original key for a modern vehicle is not just a simple metal copy, so a missing second key should be considered when estimating future cost.
25. Always Check Open Recalls by VIN
Volkswagen's official used-car checklist explicitly requires checking for outstanding workshop actions and recalls before sale.
Do not determine campaign applicability from production year alone.
Final applicability is VIN-specific.
There are at least two well-documented early Golf VIII campaigns worth knowing about.
26. Campaign 91AF — eCall
Certain early Golf VIII vehicles were recalled because of the emergency-call system.

The issue was that the eCall function might not always be ready for use, meaning that data transmission and voice communication with an emergency call centre might not be available following an accident.
Affected vehicles required a software update to the OCU — Online Connectivity Unit.
The official notice also stated that the driver might not necessarily receive a separate warning about the defect.
What This Means When Buying
Even if there is no eCall warning on the dashboard, VIN-specific campaign verification is still required.
27. Campaign 46i6 — Brake Pedal
A separate official campaign affected certain Volkswagen vehicles with DSG transmissions.

The official notice states that on certain DSG-equipped vehicles, the welded connection between the brake-pedal plate and the pedal itself might not have sufficient strength.
Under heavy braking, there was a risk that the plate could deform or detach.
The prescribed action was to inspect the weld and replace the brake pedal if necessary.
Important
This does not mean that every 2020 Golf VIII with DSG has the defect.
The specific VIN must be checked.
28. Do Not Limit the Check to Campaigns 91AF and 46i6
The list above should not be treated as a complete catalogue of all possible field actions for every Golf VIII.
Volkswagen uses the VIN to determine applicable recalls, software updates and other workshop actions.
Before purchase, ask for:
a check of all open campaigns by VIN
rather than only asking:
“Was the eCall recall completed?”
29. Road Test: Correct Sequence
A useful road test should include several operating conditions.
Volkswagen's official process evaluates cold and hot starting, engine operation, acceleration and deceleration, transmission, braking, steering, suspension and electronic systems.
Stage 1 — Cold Vehicle
Check:
- starting;
- sound;
- vibration;
- warning messages;
- infotainment.
Stage 2 — Low-Speed Driving
Check:
- steering;
- suspension;
- clutch or DSG;
- brakes;
- parking systems.
Stage 3 — Normal Acceleration
The engine should build power smoothly.
There should be no:
- EPC warning;
- hesitation;
- limp mode;
- severe vibration;
- unusual turbocharger noise.
Stage 4 — Braking
Check:
- no pulling to one side;
- no strong pulsation;
- no abnormal noise.
Stage 5 — Fully Warm Vehicle
Recheck:
- idle;
- restart after stopping;
- transmission;
- cooling system;
- warning messages.
Stage 6 — Second Diagnostic Scan
Scan the fault memory again after the road test.
30. What to Check After the Road Test
Do not end the inspection immediately after driving.
Open the bonnet again.
Check for:
- new coolant traces;
- coolant smell;
- fresh oil leakage;
- unusual fuel smell;
- expansion-tank condition;
- cooling-fan behaviour;
- new dashboard warnings.
Then perform the second diagnostic scan.

One of these signs does not automatically mean the vehicle must be rejected.
But buying without understanding the cause is risky.
