Hummer H2 Petrol 6.0 V8 (316 / 325 hp): Service Intervals

This guide covers the Hummer H2 6.0-litre petrol V8 with eight cylinders, commonly listed with 316 or 325 hp. Service intervals must be selected by model year and VIN, not by the advertised power output: the 2003 H2 uses a conventional mileage-based maintenance schedule, while 2004–2007 models use GM’s Oil Life System with alternating Maintenance I and Maintenance II services.

The intervals below are based on GM Hummer H2 owner documentation. They apply to the 6.0 V8 H2 and should not be copied to H2 models with another engine.

Basic engine information

The quoted mileage intervals are from U.S. owner manuals. Approximate conversions are: 30,000 mi = 48,300 km; 50,000 mi = 80,500 km; 100,000 mi = 160,900 km; 150,000 mi = 241,400 km.

Main service intervals

Engine oil and filter

GM’s Oil Life System calculates oil life from engine operating conditions, including engine revolutions and temperature; it is not a fixed-mileage reminder. Change the oil and filter when the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message appears, reset the system afterwards, and do not exceed 12 months between oil changes.

For 2003 H2 models, GM says to change the oil as soon as possible and within the next two fuel fills after the message appears. For 2004–2007 models, the manual specifies service within 600 miles / 1,000 km of the message. The original manuals specify SAE 5W-30 oil meeting GM Standard 6094M. This is a historical specification, so a current oil choice should be verified against the vehicle’s VIN-specific documentation and the lubricant manufacturer’s current approvals.

Maintenance I and Maintenance II: 2004–2007 models

Later 6.0 V8 H2 models alternate between Maintenance I and Maintenance II when the oil-life system calls for service.

Both services include:

• Engine oil and filter replacement, followed by an Oil Life System reset.
• Chassis lubrication and checks for leaks or damage.
• Engine air-filter inspection.
• Tyre-pressure, wear and rotation checks.
• Brake-system inspection.
• Coolant and windscreen-washer fluid checks.
• Any additional mileage-based service that has become due.

Air filter and fuel filter

Do not use one interval for every 6.0 V8 H2.

For the 2003 H2, the factory schedule calls for engine air-filter and fuel-filter replacement at 30,000-mile intervals: 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. In dusty conditions, the engine air filter should also be inspected at 15,000-mile intervals.

For 2004 models, GM specifies air-filter inspection in dusty use and replacement at 100,000 miles. In 2005–2007 documentation, vehicles fitted with an air-filter restriction indicator require the indicator to be checked at every oil change; the filter is replaced when the indicator shows restriction. Later owner schedules include a fuel-system and exhaust-system inspection every 25,000 miles, but do not state a regular fuel-filter replacement interval. Therefore, the 2003 30,000-mile fuel-filter interval must not be presented as a universal rule for all H2 6.0 V8 vehicles.

Spark plugs and ignition wires

The 6.0 V8 has eight spark plugs. GM specifies replacement at 100,000 miles / approximately 161,000 km. For 2003 models, plug wires are inspected at that service; later schedules list replacement of the spark plugs and wires together. Automatic transmission and transfer case

The automatic-transmission fluid and filter interval depends on operating conditions:

• Normal operation: replace at 100,000 miles / approximately 161,000 km.
• Severe operation: replace at 50,000 miles / approximately 80,500 km.

GM classifies the following as severe transmission use: mainly heavy city traffic in temperatures above 32°C, hilly or mountainous driving, frequent trailer towing, and taxi, police or delivery service.

Coolant, belts and timing chain

With the specified DEX-COOL coolant mixture, GM schedules cooling-system service at 150,000 miles / approximately 241,400 km or five years, whichever comes first. The factory coolant mixture is 50% DEX-COOL and 50% clean water. GM warns that use of an incorrect coolant can shorten the required service interval to 30,000 miles / 24 months. 2007 H2 Owner’s Manual

The accessory drive belt is inspected at 150,000 miles. The 6.0 V8 uses a timing chain, and the factory maintenance schedules do not specify a routine replacement interval for it. Brake fluid and cabin filter

GM includes regular brake-system inspection in the maintenance program, but the H2 owner schedules do not state a fixed time or mileage interval for brake-fluid replacement. A generic “replace every two years” statement should not be presented as a factory H2 interval.

The cited H2 schedules also do not list a routine cabin-filter replacement interval. Do not transfer an interval from another GM model without verifying the exact vehicle equipment and VIN.
