Hummer H2 - 2003 — 2009
The Hummer H2 is a large American SUV with a strong off-road character. It was produced from 2002 to 2009 and was sold primarily as a 2003–2009 model-year vehicle. General Motors developed it after acquiring the HUMMER brand, while AM General assembled H2 vehicles for the U.S. market in Mishawaka, Indiana. Compared with the Hummer H1, the H2 was intended for a broader group of buyers: it retained the brand’s distinctive angular styling and imposing appearance while offering more comfort, equipment, and everyday usability.
Technically, the H2 relied on heavy-duty General Motors truck mechanicals, with a front-mounted engine, four-wheel drive, and a robust three-piece welded ladder frame. It featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a five-link rear suspension. Its standard four-wheel-drive system used an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case, including a low range for more demanding off-road conditions. Large tyres, underbody protection, and an electronically locking rear differential further reinforced its off-road credentials.
The H2 was available as a closed SUV, while the Hummer H2 SUT (Sport Utility Truck) joined the range for the 2005 model year. The SUT featured an open cargo bed and a folding Midgate partition between the cabin and the bed. When the Midgate was opened, the usable cargo-bed length could be extended to approximately six feet, or 1.83 metres. This allowed the H2 SUT to combine the characteristics of a large SUV and a pickup truck.
For most of its production run, the H2 used a petrol Vortec 6.0-litre V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. For the 2008 model year, it received a more powerful 6.2-litre Vortec V8 producing 393 hp and 563 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed Hydra-Matic 6L80 automatic transmission. Both body styles were offered exclusively with four-wheel drive. Due to its considerable weight, dimensions, and V8 engine, the H2 has high fuel consumption and higher running costs than conventional family SUVs.
The 2008 refresh introduced a completely redesigned interior with a new instrument panel, improved materials, and more modern multimedia equipment. Depending on trim level and body style, available equipment included a third row of seats, navigation, a rear-view camera, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a Bose audio system, and self-levelling rear air suspension. The updated safety equipment included four-wheel ABS, traction control, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, Panic Brake Assist, front airbags, and side-curtain airbags with rollover sensing.
Hummer H2 production ended after the 2009 model year, and the model did not receive a direct successor. Today, the H2 remains one of the most distinctive large American SUVs of its era. It suits buyers who value a bold design, a V8 engine, a genuine 4x4 system, and off-road ability, while accepting its large dimensions, high fuel consumption, and higher maintenance costs.
