Scope and an important naming correction
This guide covers Volkswagen Golf VIII petrol versions fitted with the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI engine in the following power classes:

Use the kW value, VIN, engine code, model year and transmission as the definitive identifiers. Volkswagen’s own materials use both 115 PS and 116 KS for the 85 kW class, and both 130 PS and 131 PS appear for the 96 kW class in different publications. Those labels should not be treated as different engines.
The guide does not cover the Golf eHybrid or GTE plug-in hybrid powertrains, even though they also use a 1.5-litre petrol engine in later model years.
Not every engine-and-transmission combination was sold in every country or throughout Golf VIII production. Confirm the individual car before applying any maintenance or inspection conclusion.
Volkswagen identifies the 1.5-litre Golf engines as 1,498 cm³ four-cylinder units. Early 96 kW and 110 kW versions use Active Cylinder Management (ACT); later 1.5 TSI evo2 versions use ACTplus. On these engines, two cylinders can be deactivated under suitable low- or medium-load conditions to reduce fuel consumption.

A proper inspection should be performed on a lift, with a full diagnostic scan, before and after a road test. Volkswagen’s own Approved Used multi-point check follows that general sequence: recall check, initial fault-memory interrogation, mechanical inspection, road test and final fault-memory interrogation.
1. Identify the exact vehicle before judging its condition
Do not rely on an advertisement title such as “Golf 1.5 TSI 150 hp DSG.” It may not state whether the vehicle is:
- a conventional TSI or 48 V eTSI;
- an early 96 kW / 130 PS version or a later 85 kW / 115–116 PS version;
- fitted with a manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG;
- equipped with the original market-specific emissions and service configuration.
Confirm before the inspection
- VIN;
- first-registration date and model year;
- power in kW on the registration document;
- engine code;
- transmission code and actual transmission type;
- TSI or eTSI designation;
- fixed or flexible service regime;
- original destination market;
- all keys supplied with the car.
If the advertisement, registration document, VIN data and vehicle itself do not agree, resolve that discrepancy before spending money on a detailed inspection.
2. VIN check and open campaigns
The VIN is the primary identifier for the individual vehicle. Use it to:
- compare the car with its registration documents;
- request Volkswagen service history where it is available;
- establish the precise engine and transmission configuration;
- check all outstanding recalls, software actions and workshop campaigns;
- obtain the correct VIN-specific maintenance plan.
Volkswagen’s Approved Used checklist explicitly begins with outstanding workshop actions / recalls and a diagnostic check. A production date alone is not enough to establish recall applicability.
What to ask the seller or Volkswagen partner for
- printed or digital service history;
- evidence that open campaigns have been completed;
- all workshop invoices;
- the current service-indicator status;
- confirmation of the engine and gearbox from the VIN.
3. Service history matters more than one mileage figure
Assess mileage together with a chronological, verifiable service record. Volkswagen offers fixed and flexible servicing, and the applicable regime depends on vehicle equipment and operating conditions. Therefore, a generic internet interval must not override the VIN-specific service plan.
Review the following records where possible
- Digital Service Schedule entries;
- service dates and mileage at every visit;
- engine-oil and filter changes;
- spark-plug replacement;
- brake-fluid replacement;
- air and cabin filters;
- transmission-related work;
- repairs, warranty work and diagnostic reports;
- recall or campaign completion;
- invoices from independent VAG specialists.
The sequence must be logical. For example:
35,000 km → 52,000 km → 71,000 km → current odometer 64,000 km
requires a clear explanation.
Dealer-only history is not mandatory for a good purchase. A competent independent workshop can maintain the vehicle correctly. What matters is that the work, date, mileage and materials used can be verified.
4. Check the engine-oil record correctly
Do not conclude that the correct oil was used merely because an invoice says “0W-20” or “5W-30.” Viscosity alone does not identify the Volkswagen approval required for a particular engine code and model year.
For the individual vehicle, compare the invoice with:
- the owner’s manual;
- the VIN-specific Volkswagen workshop data;
- the service regime shown by the vehicle;
- the exact Volkswagen oil approval specified for that engine.
During inspection, check
- oil level on level ground, using the procedure in the owner’s manual;
- fresh external leakage;
- signs of poor workmanship around the oil filter, filler cap and drain area;
- whether oil changes were regularly recorded;
- whether the seller can identify the oil approval used.
An unexplained low oil level, fresh leak or inconsistent oil history should be diagnosed before purchase.
5. Timing drive: look for a toothed belt, not a timing-chain record
The 1.5 TSI / eTSI belongs to Volkswagen’s EA211 engine family. Volkswagen describes the EA211 valve drive as using a low-friction toothed belt rather than a timing chain. A service-history entry claiming a “timing-chain replacement” for this engine family therefore requires clarification.
Volkswagen’s Approved Used check sheet says to inspect the cambelt and replace it according to the applicable ELSA interval. That is the correct principle for a buyer:
- inspect the accessible belt-drive area for contamination or visible damage;
- check for oil or coolant leaks in the area;
- obtain the correct VIN-specific belt requirement;
- do not invent a universal 150,000 km, 180,000 km or 210,000 km replacement rule for every Golf VIII 1.5 TSI.
Ask the workshop to assess
- belt condition where visible;
- belt edges and surface;
- oil, coolant or other-fluid contamination;
- auxiliary-belt condition;
- tensioners and pulleys where accessible;
- relevant fault memory and unusual noise.
A belt cannot be assessed properly from an advertisement photo or a short engine start.
6. Cold start is essential
Ask the seller not to warm up the car before you arrive. A cold engine makes it easier to identify starting, idle, noise and warning-lamp issues that may be less apparent after warm-up.
Volkswagen’s used-car procedure includes checking cold and hot starting, engine operation, idle, noise, vibration, acceleration and deceleration.
With the engine cold, check that
- the engine starts promptly;
- no warning remains illuminated after self-test;
- idle stabilises normally;
- there is no severe misfire or strong shaking;
- there is no persistent blue, white or black exhaust smoke;
- there is no strong fuel smell in the engine bay;
- there are no loud metallic noises;
- the engine does not enter reduced-power mode.
The 1.5 TSI is a four-cylinder engine. It should not be judged against the sound and vibration characteristics of the three-cylinder 1.0 TSI.
7. Engine-bay inspection
Volkswagen’s Approved Used checklist includes a visual leak inspection, 12 V battery load test, check of belts, hoses, engine oil, brake fluid and coolant.
Engine oil
Check:
- level;
- fresh leakage;
- obvious contamination around the filler cap;
- signs of oil and coolant mixing;
- evidence of improvised repairs.
Coolant
Only with the engine cold, inspect:
- coolant level;
- expansion tank;
- hoses and connections;
- dried coolant residue;
- wet areas or a coolant smell;
- signs that the owner regularly tops up coolant.
Low coolant does not identify the cause by itself. It does justify a cooling-system diagnosis before purchase.
Hoses, wiring and modifications
Look for:
- cracked hoses;
- wet or oily joints;
- damaged wiring insulation;
- non-factory electrical splices;
- poorly fitted aftermarket equipment;
- signs of collision repair around the engine bay.
8. Always test the 12 V battery
The 12 V battery is important on every Golf VIII. It remains important on eTSI cars because the 48 V system does not eliminate the conventional 12 V electrical system.
Volkswagen’s official used-car check requires both a 12 V battery load test and a physical/mounting check. A no-load voltage reading is not an adequate substitute for a load test.
Pay particular attention if:
- the car has been parked for a long time;
- starting is inconsistent;
- Start/Stop is often unavailable;
- several unrelated electronic warnings appear;
- the battery age is unknown;
- the vehicle has had a recent replacement battery but no supporting workshop record is available.
9. Inspect underneath on a lift
A pre-purchase inspection without a lift is incomplete. Volkswagen’s checklist includes checks for:
- shock absorbers;
- exhaust, brackets, clamps and heat shields;
- catalytic converter exterior;
- steering system and joints;
- suspension arms;
- driveshafts, CV joints and boots;
- brake lines and joints;
- transmission mounts and linkages;
- fuel lines, cables and pipes;
- engine leakage;
- gearbox leakage;
- underbody damage.
An inspection from above may miss a gearbox leak, damaged underbody, torn CV boot or corroded brake-line connection.
10. Diagnostics: scan before clearing faults and scan again after the drive
Volkswagen’s Approved Used process performs an initial diagnostic interrogation before the mechanical check and a final interrogation after the road test.
Use the same sequence:
- connect a capable diagnostic tool;
- save every stored fault before clearing anything;
- record freeze-frame information where available;
- carry out the road test;
- scan the vehicle again;
- compare the result with the first scan.
Do not scan only the engine ECU
At minimum, inspect fault memory in:
- engine control unit;
- transmission control unit, where fitted;
- ABS / ESC;
- airbags;
- steering;
- gateway;
- parking and camera systems;
- infotainment;
- driver-assistance systems fitted to the vehicle;
- 48 V system on an eTSI.
A stored fault is not automatically an expensive repair. Determine whether it is active, whether it returns after the drive and whether it matches a real symptom.
11. Conventional 1.5 TSI with manual gearbox
Volkswagen documented the early Golf VIII 96 kW / 130 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS TSI engines with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Later 85 kW and 110 kW TSI manual versions also exist in the facelift range.
During the road test, check:
- consistent clutch-pedal action;
- smooth clutch engagement;
- no obvious clutch slip under load;
- gears engage without excessive force;
- gears do not jump out;
- no abnormal whine;
- no serious drivetrain vibration when accelerating or lifting off;
- normal operation once the car is fully warm.
The condition of the clutch, gearbox and dual-mass flywheel cannot be established from mileage alone.
12. eTSI is a separate configuration
An eTSI is not simply a TSI with an automatic gearbox. Volkswagen describes the Golf eTSI system as using:
- a 48 V lithium-ion battery;
- a 48 V belt-driven starter-alternator;
- 48 V and 12 V electrical systems;
- brake-energy recuperation;
- a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200) on the documented Golf eTSI versions.
The belt-driven starter-alternator acts as both starter and generator and can provide temporary electric assistance when moving off. It also enables smooth automatic restarts after the combustion engine switches off while coasting or stopping.
Before buying an eTSI, check
- no active 48 V, charging-system or drivetrain warnings;
- the 12 V battery passes a proper test;
- engine starts normally;
- Start/Stop operates normally when conditions permit;
- restarts are smooth;
- no abnormal noise is present from the belt-drive area;
- fault memory is checked in both relevant power-supply and drivetrain modules;
- the DSG behaviour is assessed both cold and warm.
The eTSI is a mild hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid. It does not use an external charging port.
13. Checking the 7-speed DSG on eTSI cars
For the Golf eTSI variants documented by Volkswagen, the 7-speed DSG is identified as the DQ200. Test more than just full-throttle shifts.
Practical test sequence

Volkswagen’s used-car checklist includes transmission shifting, clutch operation, smooth acceleration/deceleration and warning lights in its road test.
Do not automatically apply a generic “every DSG needs the same 60,000 km oil service” rule. The exact gearbox code, repair history and VIN-specific Volkswagen instructions matter. An absence of one generic invoice is not proof of missed maintenance; a poor road test, leaks, warnings or recurrent transmission faults are more important.
14. ACT and ACTplus: what is normal and what is not
Volkswagen states that early 1.5 TSI engines use ACT and later 1.5 TSI evo2 engines use ACTplus. Under suitable low- and medium-load conditions, two cylinders are temporarily deactivated. The transition is intended to be barely noticeable.

Do not try to “test” cylinder deactivation by holding the engine at a fixed speed while parked. It is an operating strategy that depends on load, speed, temperature and other conditions.
15. Bodywork and repair evidence
Volkswagen’s Approved Used checklist includes glass, bonnet alignment, bumpers, panel profile, body damage, repair evidence, paint condition and corrosion.
Inspect
- panel gaps;
- paint-shade consistency;
- overspray on rubber seals and trim;
- bonnet, wing and door bolts;
- welds and structural seams;
- sills and pillars;
- boot floor;
- front and rear crash structures;
- underside;
- condition of windscreen and all exterior glass.
A paint-thickness gauge is a useful independent tool, although it is not a substitute for inspecting the reason and quality of a repair. A repainted panel does not automatically mean the car is unsuitable; undocumented structural repair does require careful professional assessment.
16. Airbags, seat belts and warning lamps
Volkswagen checks warning lamps, seat-belt function and seat-belt condition as part of its used-car process.
With the ignition switched on, verify that:
- the airbag warning lamp appears for self-test and then goes out;
- no airbag/SRS fault remains;
- every seat belt latches and retracts correctly;
- belt-height adjustment works where fitted;
- interior trim and pretensioner areas show no suspicious post-accident intervention.
An airbag fault or a warning lamp that never illuminates during self-test requires professional inspection.
17. Brakes
Volkswagen’s Approved Used sheet includes pad and disc condition, brake hoses, parking brake, braking performance, noise, pull, pulsation and ABS operation.
Stationary inspection
Check:
- disc surfaces;
- pronounced disc lip;
- pad thickness and evenness of wear;
- brake hoses;
- fluid level and condition;
- electronic parking-brake operation where fitted.
During the road test
Under safe conditions, verify:
- the car brakes in a straight line;
- pedal travel is normal;
- there is no strong steering-wheel vibration;
- no metal-on-metal noise is present;
- ABS/ESC warnings do not appear;
- the electronic parking brake functions correctly.
18. Tyres, suspension and steering
Volkswagen’s checklist includes tyre damage, tread, pressure, size, load/speed rating and wear pattern. It also includes shock absorbers, steering joints, suspension arms, driveshafts and CV boots.
Check tyres for
- damage;
- age-related cracking;
- tread depth;
- correct size;
- correct load and speed rating;
- direction of rotation where applicable;
- matching tyres on the same axle;
- evenness of wear.
Uneven wear is a reason to inspect wheel alignment, suspension, steering and previous impact damage.
On the lift and road test, check
- shock absorbers;
- suspension arms and joints;
- steering play;
- CV boots;
- wheel bearings;
- knocking or creaking over bumps;
- pulling to one side;
- steering-wheel position when travelling straight;
- vibration and wheel balance.
19. Golf VIII electronics: test the equipment that is actually fitted
The Golf VIII has a highly digital electrical architecture. A proper inspection must not stop with the engine ECU.
Volkswagen’s checklist includes warning lights, locks, windows, mirrors, climate controls, heated seats, infotainment, phone functions, navigation, camera, driver-assistance functions, cruise control, Start/Stop and multi-function steering wheel controls where fitted.
Test each important function, not just the screen
- infotainment start-up and touchscreen response;
- audio;
- Bluetooth / phone connection;
- navigation where fitted;
- reversing camera and parking sensors;
- climate control and air conditioning;
- instrument display;
- physical and touch controls;
- electric windows, mirrors and locks;
- steering-wheel controls;
- adaptive cruise control, Lane Assist, Side Assist, Front Assist and Park Assist only where fitted;
- headlights, indicators, wipers and washers.
Multiple warning messages can share one cause, including a power-supply issue. A full scan and 12 V battery test should come before assuming several control units have failed independently.
20. Check every key
Volkswagen’s Approved Used procedure requires a check of all ignition keys, central locking, Keyless Entry and alarm function where applicable.
Obtain every key the seller says is included. A modern original key is not merely a metal duplicate, so a missing second key should be included in your cost assessment.
21. Road-test sequence
Stage 1 — cold vehicle
Check:
- warning lamps;
- engine start and idle;
- engine noise and vibration;
- infotainment;
- climate-control operation.
Stage 2 — low-speed driving
Check:
- steering;
- suspension;
- clutch or DSG;
- brakes;
- parking sensors and camera;
- Start/Stop where conditions permit.
Stage 3 — normal acceleration
The engine should build power smoothly without:
- EPC or engine warning;
- persistent hesitation;
- reduced-power mode;
- severe vibration;
- abnormal turbocharger noise;
- unexpected transmission behaviour.
Stage 4 — braking
Check:
- no pull to either side;
- no strong pulsation;
- no abnormal noise;
- consistent pedal feel.
Stage 5 — fully warm vehicle
Recheck:
- idle;
- restart behaviour;
- gearbox operation;
- coolant temperature / warning messages;
- leaks or smells after parking.
Stage 6 — second diagnostic scan
Read fault memory again after the road test.
22. What to check immediately after the road test
Do not end the inspection as soon as you stop driving. Open the bonnet and inspect again for:
- fresh oil traces;
- coolant traces or smell;
- fuel smell;
- new warning messages;
- coolant-expansion-tank condition;
- abnormal cooling-fan operation;
- changes in fluid levels where visible.
Then perform the second diagnostic scan.

One warning sign does not automatically require rejecting the car. Buying it without understanding the cause is the risk.

25. Quick buyer checklist
Before meeting the seller

- establish whether the car is TSI or eTSI;
- confirm power in kW;
- confirm manual or DSG;

With the car cold
- verify VIN;
- check oil and coolant;
- inspect for leaks;
- perform a cold start;
- check warning lamps;
- assess idle and engine operation;
- test the 12 V battery.
Diagnostics

- repeat after the road test.
On a lift

- on eTSI, verify no 48 V warnings and smooth restarts.
26. What to ask a workshop to perform
Instead of asking:
“Can you quickly check whether this Golf is okay?”
ask for:
“A complete pre-purchase inspection of this Golf VIII 1.5 TSI/eTSI, including VIN and open-campaign check, service-history verification, diagnostic scan of all control units before and after a road test, cold-start assessment, engine-oil and cooling-system inspection, timing-belt-drive inspection against the VIN-specific factory requirement, 12 V battery load test, transmission/clutch check, brakes, suspension, steering, driveshafts, underbody, bodywork and all fitted electronic systems. For eTSI, also inspect the 48 V system, belt-driven starter-alternator and 7-speed DSG behaviour.”
This wording makes it much less likely that the workshop will limit the inspection to a short visual engine check and a scan of one ECU.
27. Final verdict
A Golf VIII 1.5 TSI cannot be assessed properly by looking only at the engine. The basic package differs materially by build year and configuration:
- 85 kW, 96 kW and 110 kW engines must not be confused;
- TSI and eTSI are not the same inspection case;
- manual and DSG cars require different road-test checks;
- later 1.5 TSI evo2 / ACTplus details should not be copied backward to every earlier vehicle;
- all maintenance conclusions must be VIN-specific.
Before purchase, prioritise:
- VIN and exact powertrain identification;
- credible service history;
- open recall / workshop-action verification;
- cold-start behaviour;
- engine-oil and coolant condition;
- timing-belt-drive inspection against the correct factory schedule;
- a complete diagnostic scan before and after the road test;
- a real 12 V battery load test;
- brakes, suspension, steering and underbody on a lift;
- body-repair quality;
- operation of every important electronic feature;
- manual clutch or DSG behaviour under real driving conditions;
- 48 V system operation on eTSI versions.
The key protection against misinformation is simple: use VIN → current Volkswagen data → physical inspection → diagnostics, in that order.
Frequently asked questions
Is 115 PS the same engine as 116 KS?
For this Golf power class, yes: the authoritative value is 85 kW. Volkswagen’s 2024 European launch material calls it 115 PS, while the Serbian Volkswagen Golf page uses a 116 KS lower bound for the current range.
Is 130 PS the same as 131 PS?
