Volkswagen Golf VI (Mk6) - 2008 — 2012
The Volkswagen Golf VI, commonly known as the Golf Mk6, is the sixth generation of Volkswagen's highly successful compact car. Introduced in autumn 2008 as the successor to the Golf Mk5, it retained the PQ35 platform but received extensive improvements to its styling, interior quality, refinement, safety and technology. As a result, the Mk6 can be regarded as a substantial evolution of the previous generation rather than an entirely new technical architecture. Exterior styling became cleaner and more precise, with a wider-looking front end, horizontal grille elements, redesigned headlights and sharper detailing. Despite the changes, the Mk6 retained the familiar proportions and practical character that had become associated with the Golf. Three-door and five-door hatchback versions formed the core of the range. The interior was one of the Golf VI's strongest areas. Volkswagen placed considerable emphasis on material quality, fit and finish, ergonomics and noise insulation. The cabin was designed to provide a more premium impression than many mainstream compact cars of the period while retaining straightforward controls, comfortable seating and the everyday practicality expected from a Golf. The engine range included naturally aspirated petrol units, turbocharged TSI petrol engines and a broad selection of TDI diesels. During this generation, Volkswagen moved many of its diesel engines from the older unit-injector system to smoother and quieter common-rail injection. Depending on the model, engines were paired with manual transmissions or Volkswagen's DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. Selected versions were also available with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Efficiency-focused BlueMotion models played an important role in the range. One of the Golf VI BlueMotion versions achieved an official combined fuel-consumption figure of approximately 3.8 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 99 g/km, illustrating Volkswagen's increasing focus on fuel economy during this period. Performance derivatives included the Golf GTI, Golf GTD and range-topping Golf R. The GTI continued the established hot-hatch formula by combining everyday usability with stronger performance and a sportier chassis. The GTD provided a diesel-powered performance alternative, while the Golf R sat at the top of the range with substantially more power and all-wheel drive. Safety and driver-assistance technology also advanced significantly. The Golf VI achieved the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating, while a driver's knee airbag became standard equipment. Depending on specification, available technologies included Light Assist automatic high-beam control, Park Assist, Hill Start Assist, DCC adaptive chassis control, Start/Stop, energy recuperation, dynamic cornering lights and LED rear lights. In 2009, the Golf VI was named World Car of the Year. Volkswagen states that approximately 3.6 million vehicles based on the sixth-generation Golf were produced, making the Mk6 another major commercial success for the brand. Today, the Golf Mk6 remains a common choice on the European used-car market. Its strengths include a practical interior, comfortable road manners, a wide selection of engines and transmissions, and excellent parts and service availability. However, prospective buyers should pay close attention to the exact engine and gearbox combination, maintenance history and previous repairs, as reliability and ownership costs can vary considerably between individual versions.
